[RECIPE] Easy Kid Recipes For Mexican Drinks

By KC Kudra

Tequila, Kahlua, and margaritas are well known Mexican drinks for adults and there is also Mexican beer, hot chocolate with rum and lots of Mexican cocktails to choose from. However, what about kid recipes for Mexican drinks? What do Mexican children drink and how can you make kid recipes for Mexican drinks at home?

Popular Drinks for Children in Mexico

Commercial bottle sodas such as Coca Cola and Fanta are popular drinks in Mexico and kids also like to drink fruit juices, milk, and hot chocolate. Atole is a mixture of water, toasted ground corn tortillas, and toasted ground corn kernels. Add black corn, ground squash seed, and salt and you have a jocoatole. Chia is sweetened water with the chia herb, which is a bit like sage. Alfajor is a sweet and delicious drink made with almonds, honey, coconut and more.

Unusual Mexican Drink Recipes

More obscure drinks which can be found in Mexican bars and restaurants include sangrita (not to be confused with sangria) which is a weird sounding combination of sugar, orange juice, ground onion, chili, salt and vegetable colorant, and pozol, which is corn paste mixed in water with either salt or sugar added for flavor.

There are many kinds of Mexican drinks and these make the perfect accompaniment to authentic Mexican food recipes. You might like to try a milk based drink such as the thick, yogurt-like cuajada, if you are eating a spicy Mexican food with lots of chili in it.

Traditional Mexican drinks complement traditional Mexican foods and there are also lots of ice cold drinks to cool you down on a hot day or piping hot coffee or chocolate based drinks to warm you up on a cool evening.

Aqua Fresca -- A Very Refreshing Mexican Beverage

Mexicans love fruity drinks and these are suitable for adults and kids and great served with lots of ice for cooling you down on a hot summer day. Use a zero calorie sweetener or honey instead of the sugar if you prefer.

You can use any fruit you like to make Mexican aqua fresca, including apple, banana, peach, strawberry, cherry, kiwi fruit and watermelon. Experiment with different flavors for different results. The following recipe serves six people or three very thirsty ones.

Aqua Fresca with Fresh Fruit and Citrus Juice

You will need:

    4 cups water
1/4 cup sugar or equivalent honey or sweetener
2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
2 cups fresh fruit, peeled, de-seeded and chopped
Lemon or lime wedges, to garnish

How to make it:
Combine the water and fruit in a blender, and then pour this mixture into a pitcher, through a sieve. Stir in the lemon or lime juice and add sugar or sweetener to taste. Garnish the pitcher with a wedge of lemon or lime and serve with plenty of ice. If you do not have ice, you can chill the water and fruit before pureeing it, so the drink is cold.
